Today, lots of PCs are in trouble due to McAfee’s 5958 DAT file which treated the svchost.exe as a virus and deleted it from the system causing the affected PCs to restart continuously. (source)
McAfee already released a statement and already stopped the distribution of the 5958 DAT file. However, lots of PCs are already affected.
McAfee already released a fix for this problem which you can read and get here. It involves copying their fix on a portable media and running it on each affected computer. Yeah, each computer must be fixed manually in person. You can’t send the fix over the network since all the PCs are just shutting down, you know? Imagine if you are an IT Administrator of thousands of computers in your company. You might be cursing McAfee right now. That’s a lot of headache.
By the way, I wonder why the 5958 dat file passed their QA? Seems like someone is not doing their job properly.
